Expecting
The big news is that we are expecting. I sort of think that word defines me right now. I had no idea how much work being a parent would be until I became one, and I'm already stretched pretty thin between work at my firm and work at home, and I can only imagine that adding a second child to the mix is going to make the balance even more delicate. I also suspect that making partner is going to be similar in the sense that I'll become responsible for keeping associates busy and managing client billing and client development, and my responsibilities at work are going to keep pace with my responsibilities at home. My carefree days are over, and it's been a process coming to terms with that fact. But don't get me wrong; I'm still excited about all of this. It's just dawning on me that I've taken on quite a challenge, that I need to put my comfort on a shelf for a few years, and that I'm going to have to grow a lot to succeed at being a good parent and a good partner in the long run. On one level, I know I'm up for it, but on another, I'm a little daunted by the hard path ahead, if I think about it too much (like right now). I guess I will just keep taking it a step at a time and count on my support system to help me through.
On a lighter note, our son successfully completed his first Easter egg hunt today. It's really amazing how much he understands despite not having many words and sounds under his control. He's also quite adept at going down the slides at the park by himself now, and I've been enjoying capturing some footage of his adventures with a new camera that I bought. It's amazing how far cameras have come since I bought my last one, particularly in the video department. I'm still working on selling my old one, along with a couple of lenses that I don't use much, to offset the cost of recent purchases. But I've been very happy with the new camera so far. I always treasured the family videos that my parents took of us growing up and I am looking forward to sharing a high quality library of home videos with my kids, along with some great photos of course.
